Scissor Sweep from Closed Guard: Beginner Guide

The scissor sweep reverses a partner who is kneeling in your closed guard. You sit up, place your shin across their belly, hook the far leg, and chop your legs like scissors to roll them over so you can climb on top.

A white belt performs a scissor sweep from closed guard, shin across the belly and bottom leg chopping behind the knee.

The scissor sweep is a classic first sweep because it teaches balance, grips and timing in one move. From closed guard, your top leg blocks the belly while your bottom leg chops behind the knee. Together, the legs act like scissors and tip your partner over to the side.

When the scissor sweep works

This sweep works when your partner sits tall on their knees with their weight on their feet. If they lean forward, break the posture first or choose another attack. In our classes we often see students push with their arms alone. The sweep is a leg and hip movement, so the arms only guide.

Key details

  • Grip the far sleeve and the same-side collar, then sit up toward the grip.
  • Open your guard and slide your top knee across their belly. Your shin makes a shelf against their stomach.
  • Extend the bottom leg along the outside of their near knee, ready to chop.
  • Pull the collar down and across while you push with the shin and kick with the bottom leg at the same time.

How to drill it

Drill the sit-up and shin placement first, with your partner kneeling still. Then add the chop and watch where your partner falls. Repeat ten times on each side, then let your partner pull away or lean in so you learn when to switch to another attack. Smooth, repeated movement matters more than speed.

Common mistakes and safety

A common mistake is chopping the legs before the shin is in place, which gives your partner time to post a hand. Another is turning your back to the mat while you sit up. Stay on your side with your elbow near your hip. Practice with a partner who falls slowly at first, and keep your knees away from the partner's knee joint. Ask a qualified instructor to check your angles.

After you land on top, secure mount or side control. To see the whole sequence with coaching, come try a free trial class and ask us about the hip bump sweep too.

Step by step

  1. Set your grips

Grab the far sleeve with one hand and the same-side collar with the other.

  2. Sit up to the side

Open the guard and sit up on one elbow, turning your body toward the sleeve grip.

  3. Shin across the belly

Slide your top knee across their stomach so the shin acts as a shelf.

  4. Hook the leg

Extend your bottom leg along the outside of their near knee, ready to chop.

  5. Chop and push

Kick with the bottom leg, push with the shin, and pull the collar across your body.

  6. Follow and climb

As they roll over, come up with them and take mount or side control.
