Knee Slice Pass: Cut Through Guard with Pressure

The knee slice pass moves your knee across your partner's thigh to cut through their guard and land in side control. Keep your base wide, control the far arm, and slide your hips down their body with steady chest pressure.
The knee slice pass is a dependable way to get past an open or half guard. Instead of rushing around the legs, you slide your knee over the thigh, pin the hips with your body, and finish in side control. It is a favorite pass in our classes because small details beat strength.
When to slice
Use it when your partner has a leg between you and their guard is not fully locked. Half guard is the classic place to start. In our classes we often see students lose the pass by standing too tall. Stay low, with your knees wide and your weight forward on your partner's chest.
Key details
- Control the far side with an underhook or a cross-face. Keep your own head up and away from guillotine range.
- Pin their near thigh with your hand, then drive your knee over it toward the mat.
- Slide your shin across their thigh and stay heavy through the shoulder.
- Walk your hips toward their hip line and flatten them before you settle.
How to drill it
Start by drilling the knee path alone on the mat, sliding it across an imaginary thigh. Then work with a partner who holds half guard without resisting. Count three seconds of chest pressure before you continue. After that, let your partner frame and shrimp so you learn to stay heavy without rushing. Switch sides after every few rounds.
Common mistakes and safety
The most common error is leaving the far arm free, which lets your partner frame on your neck or underhook you. Another is crushing the neck with a harsh cross-face. A cross-face should rest on the shoulder and jaw line with gentle pressure. Always work with partners who communicate, and stop if anyone feels pain in the neck or knees.
After the pass, stay patient and settle into side control. If you want to practice with a coach watching your angles, take a free trial class at Renzo Gracie West Boca Raton. You may also like the side control escape, which shows the pass from the bottom.
