Side Control Escape: Shrimp and Recover Guard
Esta página ainda não foi traduzida; mostrando a versão em inglês.
A side control escape uses frames, a small bridge and a hip escape to create space and bring your knee between you and your partner. Protect your neck, move your hips first, and recover guard before your partner settles their weight.
A good side control escape feels like solving a puzzle, not winning a wrestling match. Your partner is across your chest and trying to flatten you. You answer with frames, a quick bridge, and a hip escape that brings your knee back between your bodies. The goal is guard, not a scramble.
Where the escape starts
Before you move, build two frames. Place one forearm on their hip and the other on their shoulder, never on the face or throat. In our classes we often see students push the face and lose their elbows. Keep your elbows inside, and keep your chin tucked to protect the neck.
Key details
- Turn toward your partner just enough to fit the frame, but never give them your back.
- Bridge toward them for a moment to create a gap near your hips.
- Shrimp away into that gap and slide the inside knee in front of their hip.
- Use the knee as a shield, then hug the leg or the hip to recover half guard.
How to drill it
Begin by practicing the frames while your partner holds light side control. Add the bridge and shrimp, and repeat the entire sequence ten times on each side. Then ask your partner to follow your hips so you learn to keep the frame while moving. Over time, add resistance and review your knee path when you recover guard.
Common mistakes and safety
The biggest mistake is fighting for the escape while flat on your back. Without the gap, your hips cannot move. Another mistake is pushing the throat or jaw, which is unsafe and can annoy a partner. Frame on the shoulder and hip, move slowly, and stay patient. Train under a qualified instructor and tell your partner if the pressure becomes uncomfortable.
The escape mirrors the knee slice pass, so practice both sides. When you want to feel it with a coach, visit us for a free trial class and learn how a side control position is held and escaped.
Passo a passo
Tuck and frame
Tuck your chin, keep your elbows in, and frame with one forearm on the hip and one on the shoulder.
Turn slightly toward them
Rotate to your side to fit your frames without exposing your back.
Bridge for a gap
Plant your feet and bridge toward your partner to make a small gap at the hips.
Shrimp into the gap
Push off your feet and slide your hips away so the gap grows.
Insert the knee
Bring your inside knee in front of their hip so your shin blocks them.
Recover guard
Hug the leg or hip to take half guard, then pull your other leg through to rebuild guard.
